HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO EXAMINE YOUNG CHILDREN FOR VISION PROBLEMS?

The physicians at Children's Eye Clinic specialize in evaluating children of all ages.  While it may not be possible to test an infant or toddler with an eye chart, much can still be determined about their vision by using other methods. We pride ourselves on our child-friendly exam rooms, specially designed to help make your child as comfortable as possible during their eye examination.  Many children even look forward to coming back to visit our clinic!

The doctors will assess your child's ability to focus and track on objects in the office as well as assess them for eye muscle imbalance problems which are commonly present in children.  The health of the front of the eyes is assessed and the eyes are then dilated with eye drops to allow the doctors to view and assess the health of the back portion of the eye.

This also provides a means to assess your child for the possible need for glasses by using an instrument called a retinoscope along with a series of lenses to assess certain light reflections from your child's eyes.  The doctor can then prescribe glasses if indicated based on this assessment.

A complete eye examination with dilating eye drops will usually require 1 to 1 1/2 hours in the office, which includes a period of 30 to 45 minutes for the eyes to dilate.  During this time, children may wait in either our front office or back office play areas.
